Computer FEA (Finite Element Analysis) models are no substitute for good machine design. However, it does provide an important tool for making contemporary machines lighter and stronger. The comments below describe what to look for in such models.

 


1. Peak stress is much less than the yield strength of material.

 

2. Stress (the green patches) are distributed so that they look like cloudes, not points.



3. Part deflections do not cause interference.



4. Lower stress (dark blue) areas are reduced in thickness.

 

5.  Designing for the correct amount of deflection under braking allows for optimal modulation, i.e. contolled stiffness.
